The paint industry in Vietnam is developing amid challenges

In recent years, despite domestic economic difficulties, the chemical industry has continued to grow, including the paint sector – this was the assessment of Dr. Phung Ha, former Director General of the Department of Chemicals (Ministry of Industry and Trade), during the introduction of the 2nd International Exhibition on Coatings, Dyes, and Inks – Coatings Expo Vietnam 2015.

According to Dr. Phung Ha, Vietnam’s coatings industry has maintained an average growth rate of 20% in recent years. However, the distribution of enterprises in this sector is uneven, mainly concentrated in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, and the Mekong Delta region, while other central regions remain underdeveloped. Leading paint companies in Vietnam include Bach Tuyet Paint, Son A Dong, while foreign companies include Nippon, AkzoNobel, and Jotun.

Despite its rapid growth, the paint industry still relies heavily on imported raw materials for production. The workforce supporting the industry remains insufficient and weak, especially since there is no unified standard for the sector. To develop further, Vietnam’s paint industry needs to build a synchronized system—from raw materials to production standards—and address workforce challenges while completing the industry’s regulatory framework.

Sharing the same view, Ms. Nguyen Thi Lac Huyen, Vice President and General Secretary of the Vietnam Paint and Ink Association, stated that Vietnam’s paint and ink market still holds significant growth potential, but companies have not fully leveraged these opportunities. Therefore, in recent years, the Vietnam Paint and Ink Association has organized specialized seminars to find development pathways for local paint companies, while also participating in trade fairs and exhibitions to help enterprises connect with partners and importers.

“That is why this year, the Vietnam Paint and Ink Association is organizing for companies to participate in Coatings Expo Vietnam 2015, to seek business opportunities, raw materials, and industry equipment,” Ms. Huyen said.

Coatings Expo Vietnam 2015 is scheduled to take place from June 10–12, 2015, at the Saigon Exhibition and Convention Center (SECC), Ho Chi Minh City, featuring 80 booths and around 100 domestic and international companies from countries and territories such as China, India, Japan, Singapore, Taiwan, and Ukraine. Exhibited products include raw materials, resins, pigments, additives, solvents, machinery, production and testing equipment, health and safety solutions, environmental products, coatings, and inks. Coatings Expo Vietnam 2015 is receiving significant attention from leading companies from South Korea, Japan, and the UK.
